Croton River and Croton Point

The watershed of the Croton River extends from the Pawling Mountains of  Dutchess and Putnam Counties to the lakes of Westchester County and supplies approximately 10% of New York City's water.  The Croton Dam was built on this river in 1837.  Historic sites along the Croton River include Van Cortlandt Manor, a pre-Revolutionary War estate owned by the Van Cortlandt family.  Access to the Hudson River and Croton Point is through a 1/2-mile long marsh area draining into Croton Bay.

Croton Point Park covers the southwestern part of the Croton Point peninsula. Water access to the park is through Old Canoe Beach, a sandy cove, approximately 1/3 up the western shore.  Hand launch site is behind the park office, next to the swimming beach. Croton Point is a 1 and 1/2 mile long peninsula that extends into the Hudson River. To the north of Croton Point is Haverstraw Bay.
