Bard Rock & Esopus Island Hudson River, Hyde Park, New York

An Island, a beautiful creek, a lighthouse, historic mansions, serene scenery fill this area of the Hudson with magic. One of our favorite destination paddle spots. Following the cove out into the Hudson River and past Bard Rock, the island directly to the north is Esopus Island. There is a small beach on the southeast side of the island and a few sheltered spots on the west side. Black Creek lies directly across from Esopus Island along the west shore of the river. This area of the Hudson River has been long known as a favored Bald Eagle watching area.  North of Norrie Point lies Mills Mansion on the eastern shore and beyond the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse can be seen.

Launch: Hyde Park Landing Marina. Meet at the River Connection showroom, 9 West Market Street to change. Then its a quick 0.2 mile trip down to the marina, then we are off on the river for the paddle.

Weather and water conditions will dictate a mid-tour landing point.

Learning to kayak safely, effectively and efficiently is best done with the help of a qualified instructor. The lead instructors for River Connection Kayak Instructional Courses are American Canoe Association (ACA) Certified Instructors.  

Skills development courses are worth months of just paddling around. If you are interested in learning more kayaking skills, consider one of our Kayak Instructional Programs.
