Greetings from Maine:
Kennebec and
Rapid Rivers
July 2004
I decided that I wanted to visit Maine
this summer for a short paddling trip. I didn't want to go too
early in the summer due to the fierce black flies and mosquitoes.
I also wanted to get in shape for striding. Striding is paddling
an inflatable kayak standing up through the rapids. A very long
paddle is used to reach the water, and your feet are wedged into the
boat for control through the rapids. I started striding last fall
to make easier rivers more exciting, and I became addicted to this style
immediately.
I spent three days on the Kennebec River near the
Forks in Maine. I paddled the strider for five runs, and then two
additional runs down the river in the squirt boat. The local raft
guides and area paddlers enjoyed seeing someone ride the rapids standing
up.
I met a local kayaker who publishes a paddling newspaper each
summer in Maine, so check out
Noumbrella Nick, the publisher/editor interviewed me
as the paddler of the week for the next issue so check it out if you
can.
I spent my last two days in Maine on the Rapid River near the
New Hampshire border. This river had an excellent play spot, so
after one day on the strider, I paddled the Fluid flirt for hours of
cartwheel and freestyle fun with friends. I had a great trip to
Maine, meeting new people and enjoying beautiful scenery of this state.
I didn't see any moose, but I was ready with my camera in case one
happened in my path. I expect I'll be returning to Maine later
this summer to see some different rivers and hiking trails.
