ABOUT LAYERING

The art or dressing for inclement weather is a dance. The right layers in the right order next to your skin can make all the difference.  A multi-layer system that fits well and won't restrict your movement is a must.   A typical multi-layer system includes a base layer (that moves moisture away from your skin and therefore decreases evaporative heat loss); the insulation layer (to insulate against the cold, conditions and your level of comfort determine the thickness of this layer) and; the protective outer shell (a garment that protects from wind, precipitation and possibly sun).

With differing levels of activity, the insulation layer may increase or decrease; the outer shell may be removed, etc.  The key is to balance the layers with your level of comfort and conditions.
